Termites, also known as white ants, are insects that feed on wood (especially wet or damp ones), papers, books, and even infest your housing structure. The ideal way of getting rid of such pesky insects is to engage in the service of professionals, as skills, knowledge as well as tools of this field is needed in order for a good job to be done. Some of these professionals will engage the use of chemicals in order to effectively exterminate the pesticides from the comfort of your home.
Pesticides used for termites are generally termed termiticides. With the use of chemical, there is of course a governing body to approve the safety using of all these chemicals in order not to cause harm to both human and animals. There are more or less 5 methods of termite protection in practice, there are namely soil-applied treatments, wood treatment, stainless steel mesh, and also termite baits.
When engaging with soil applied treatment, conventional liquid treatments are applied to the soil to form a complete and continuous chemical barrier in the soil around the foundation- inside and outside. This barrier should prevent termites from invading your home through the foundation and piers. On the other hand, wood treatment refers to another alternative way of using chemicals to apply termiticides on the critical wood structure during construction.
Up to date, the only chemical approved for such treatment is the disodium octoborate-tetrahydrate. Termites would neither feed nor construct shelter over treated wood, but that does not mean that termites could not find other means of entering your home, as the nearby untreated wood could be a bridge for the termites to infest your house. Other than that, there is also the stainless steel mesh method (non chemical usage) to help rid termites of your foundation. This preventive measure is done using a stainless steel mesh to wrap around the foundations, pipes, and other possible areas to prevent the intrusion of termites.
Lastly, there are the termite baits that could be planted in areas of your home as preventive or control measures. Baits are used when liquid treatments are considered unacceptable by some reasons.
